Unnatural History

The Lady With All the Answers is in the first day of tech today. This play is a one woman show starring the wonderful Julie Briskman as Ann Landers. Lady With All the Answers is the first mainstage play that we’ve done in the Bullitt Cabaret since Fully Committed in 2002. The Bullitt is an intimate space, even more so than our arena theatre, which seems ideal to me for a one woman show.

Yankee Tavern closes this weekend, next week this bar and all of its ghosts will disappear not under a wrecking ball, but at the hands of the carpenters. Then we’ll look back in time to the start of the season while we pull all of the mechanics from Trip to Bountiful out of the trap room where they have quietly waited this whole time.

While Jeff was busy making dust, Sean welded the curved bar pieces into a frame and I cut pieces of bender board to wrap around the corners. Bender board comes in two thickness, 1/8” and 3/8”. The straight walls of the bar are faced in 1/4” MDF so in order to get the curves to the same thickness I had to laminate two pieces of 1/8”. The bender board would have been difficult to attach using any of the fasteners at my disposal so instead I slathered the frame with …

Yankee Tavern is a political thriller about conspiracy theories and 9/11 that takes place in a bar in New York. For this play we’re back in the Arena theatre so the challenge in designing the set is how do you have a bar in the round? The answer in our case is that you have a round bar, or at least a bar with rounded corners.
